Claims Leakage & Quality Programs | Power BI | Process Improvement

Behind every data point is a customer. I find the leak, fix the process, and improve the experience.

Over 15 years at Allianz Partners, I translated data-driven insights into measurable process improvement, building claims quality and leakage programs that grew from a single U.S. department into the global baseline for 26 business units.

My Story

It Began With the Customer

I began my career in 2011 in customer service, selling travel insurance and learning firsthand how customers feel when travel plans fall apart. When I moved into claims, I saw the other side of that experience. A small error in the details did not only cost the company money; it cost the customer time, trust, and peace of mind.

That insight shifted my focus from whether a claim was correct to why an error occurred, and how to prevent it from happening again.

That focus guided my progression from Claims Examiner to Quality Specialist, into the first U.S. Quality Assurance Analyst role, and then into the company's first Global Leakage Analyst role. Along the way, I helped build what did not yet exist: a leakage measurement framework, layered KPIs for leadership, a real-time Power BI dashboard, approximately 30 Standards of Practice, and automation rules grounded in claim evidence.

I am now seeking to bring that same systems mindset to an organization that wants its data to drive stronger decisions, more reliable processes, and a better experience for the customers it serves.

Career Journey

Fifteen Years of Progressive Growth

Each role added a new perspective on the same system, from the customer conversation to the global leadership table.

2011
B2C Sales & Customer Service
Ranked among the top insurance sellers in the call center and built a deep understanding of customer needs when travel plans change.
2014
Claims Examiner, then Senior Claims Examiner
Earned the maximum $6K examiner authority while sustaining 90%+ quality on complex, multi-benefit, and international claims. Served as a trusted trainer and mentor for new and developing examiners.
2018
Quality Specialist
Held $20K approval authority and completed up to 750+ quality audits per month covering up to 250 examiners, translating findings into coaching and corrective action.
2021
Quality Assurance Analyst First in the U.S.
Built the first Claims QA Power BI dashboard, co-designed a layered KPI framework, authored about 30 Standards of Practice, and led the analysis that informed claims automation rules.
2024
Global Leakage Analyst First globally
Drove the rollout of the U.S. framework, standards, and targets as the global baseline across 26 business units, partnering directly with each one.

Case Studies

Three initiatives that reflect my approach: define the right question, let the evidence guide the decision, and build solutions leaders will adopt.

Finding the $7M Leak

26 business units

Challenge

Claims leakage, meaning funds paid that should not have been, was not being measured. Leaders could not see how much was leaking, where it occurred, or why.

Approach

  • Applied headquarters' leakage methodology and helped build detailed definitions and root-cause categories
  • Co-designed layered KPIs with Quality and Claims leaders: Financial Accuracy, then Payment Accuracy, then Leakage, then root cause
  • Authored about 30 Standards of Practice and quick reference guides
  • Partnered directly with 26 business units on rollout

Result

  • $7M in annual leakage quantified for the first time
  • U.S. accuracy raised from 70% to 85 to 90%, beating the 80% target
  • Leakage on examiner-handled U.S. claims cut from 9 to 12% to 4% or less
  • U.S. baseline, standards, and targets rolled out as the global standard

Evidence-Based Automation

30% to under 3% leakage

Challenge

Examiners struggled with medical documentation requirements, and online claims processed through automation carried leakage of about 30%. Training alone was not closing the gap.

Approach

  • Defined claim populations with Business Intelligence and sampled illness, injury, and online claims
  • Found that acute illnesses and injuries in the right policy window were almost always covered, while claims filed under the "Other" reason usually were not
  • Proposed documentation simplification with Claims and Quality leaders, cleared through compliance review
  • Translated findings into pay/deny rules with the RPA developer

Result

  • Leakage on automated U.S. claims cut by about 90%, from 30% to under 3%
  • Rules designed so covered acute claims did not require unnecessary medical records
  • This result became the business case for extending the targets globally

From 5 Days to Real Time

31 leaders trained

Challenge

Quality reporting was built manually in Excel and took 5 to 6 days after month end. By the time leaders saw a trend, it was already a problem.

Approach

  • Authored data requirements for BI-built PeopleSoft extracts, specifying source fields, filter criteria, time frames, and business rules
  • Cleansed and shaped the source data, then designed a star-schema data model relating the claims fact table to product, benefit, examiner, team leader, and date dimensions
  • Authored DAX measures for Financial Accuracy, Payment Accuracy, and leakage rate by both volume and dollar value
  • Designed the report UX: slicers, drill-down hierarchies, KPI conditional formatting against targets, and button-based page navigation, aligned to corporate brand standards
  • Validated measures against source data, led user acceptance testing with managers, and published a step-by-step user guide

Result

  • Real-time visibility replaced month-end reporting delays
  • 26 team leaders and 5 managers trained to self-serve
  • Reporting reached audiences up to the COO
  • Audit form streamlined from 25 questions to 3 with Quality and Claims leadership
Dashboard Design

Sample Dashboard

An illustration of how I design for leaders: the executive view first, then one click to the root cause. Hover over the charts and select a region to explore.

Claims Quality Performance
Illustrative sample | invented data
Leakage rate by month
% of paid claim value | dashed line is the 5% target
Leakage by root cause
Share of leakage dollars, last 12 months

All figures are fictional and exist only to demonstrate dashboard design.
